WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE A
NOSEBLEED? 1.
Pinch nostrils closed for 5 minutes by the clock (no peeking) 2.
Release and hold head down to check for further bleeding. If present,
repeat step 1. 3.
Use saline nasal spray (2 squirts in each nostril as every 2 hours for the
rest of the day) 4.
Drink cold liquids 5.
Apply Vaseline or Neosporin ointment to the inside front part of the nose
each am and PM. 6.
Contact the office if the above fails to control the bleeding
List of Do’s: -Use Tylenol for pain -Drink cold liquids -Avoid cigarette smoking -Use saline nasal spray at
least four times per day -Put a small dab of Neosporin
ointment on nasal septum at bedtime and in the morning (this is
important!) -Use a cool mist humidifier in
the bedroom at night -Avoid sneezing; if
unavoidable, sneeze through your open mouth -Elevate head of bed with 3
pillows under your head WHAT SHOULDN'T I DO IF I
HAVE A NOSEBLEED? Don’ts: -
Do not drink hot liquids or eat hot foods for one week -
Avoid blowing the nose or forceful sniffing -
Avoid wiping noses with tissue; blot gently instead -
No strenuous activity -
No heavy lifting -
No bending over (not even to tie shoes!) -
No aspirin or aspirin-containing products (Goody powders, BC Powders -
No NSAIDS (anti-inflammatory drugs) example: Motrin, Naprosyn, Aleve, and
